You dont know how much this means to me. The internet has humbled me to find old service buddies that never left Germany, meaning their value to the support was that important. The house I lived in Vockerode was built in the late 1600s. There was a Town Crier. There was big guy who I saw walking toward me at a brisk pace allowing my heart to move into my thoart. He had a ball and chain over his shoulder and a big black bag. I later found out he was the chimney sweep. A friend ran into our house knocking off a small piece of the white and I saw the limbs and mud that made up the wall. I will never forget those times. I once came home to the USA and asked why there was not houses built like those that dont fall down. I am disabled with hep c, cirrhosis of liver. Never drank much, go figure -  ha ha should have drunk it. The beer in Germany was something I will always remember. My attempt at a page is http://members.xoom.com/swink/page2.html

TAYLOR ..
Jim Taylor,
FALLEN HERO, wrote this shortly before his death in January, 1999: I went to your Air Force site and was really surprised. I went to Germany in early l953. I was in USAFSS and was supposed to go to southern Germany to the 6911. When we landed in Bremerhaven on the USN Geiger ship they cancelled our orders and we stayed in Bremerhaven where we did our job for USAFSS in the 6913th. That was a long time ago and I seem to recall it was the 2nd Radio Squadron Mobile and later the changed to the 6911RSM. I would have to try to find the paperwork to be sure. But I was there for about 5 years, at the time you could extend your tour if you wanted to. I only remembered on our debriefing when we left there we could not devulge any information that we learned. My last 11 years in the Air Force I flew in the SAC Airborne Command Post and logged over 5000 hours on a EC-135 aircraft. I flew out of Chatteroux, France in C-118 when the command post was first started in Europe. Then we went to Mendenhall, England and we got the EC 135s.

I served with the ESR Detachment 2 - OL3 at Camp Pieri, near Wiesbaden from 1968 towards the end of 1969 when our unit was merged with the 6911th at Cambrai-Fritsch, Darmstadt, where we shared the compound with the 6910th. I served there until I left the Air Force in May 1971. We were not a true part of the 6911th and its mobile comm mission, nor anything like the mission directed towards the Warsaw Pact. I had never known the prior history of the 6911th or the happenings since. I am glad I came across your site. I do recall my first visit to the compound of the 6910th when I was still attached to Det 2. A group of us Det folk were sent there for a day of orientation. We checked through security and were led into a room with a giant glass map of Europe. We were instructed in the mission and scope of the 6910th and the number of linguists of all European languages found on-site... morse code, ditty boppers, intel newspaper specialists, crypto (green door), top-secret destroy-before-reading--eyes-only...  Suddenly, personnel from the 6910th began entering the room and there was a fever of voices that called out troop movements, tanks, aircraft all heading into Czechoslovakia. As with Hungary a decade plus before, the Soviets and their allies punished the small nation that wished to break free from the totalitarian hammer and fist. Needless to say, as we were watching the invasion on glass, we were told to leave the map room. Don, we were using reel to reel technology. Headsets on ears and listening to phone communications. What a time it was. Thank you Don, for caring so much as to give of your time and resources towards preservation of the history and honor of the 6911th.

Its a neat thing that you have in the mill. I recently heard from A.L. Hilscher in Tx about the reunion. I'm excited about it. Hope you don't forget some of my old buddies: Charles O. Yarrington (Red), Fred Gettner, Nick DePaul (Mouse), Don Hatfield, Dave McConnagie (Spelling Doubtful), John J. Jones, John Haller, Tiny Sands (Tiny), Tom Flatley, Jay Jasinski, Rudy Bannet, SSgt Vanwagner (always called him Sarge, was a block chief), Gene Sarazen, SSgt Landray, but to name a few. Catcher for the Rummel Rascles and Played on the Delta Daggers BBall Team.
Keep up the good work. Saw the photos at the site. Tom Flatly, remember him carring around a pint fruit jar with several crabs saying they were his pets. Fred Gettner, JV Dornak, Charlie Bradshaw, John Haller, Pops Hatfield, Castigalloni, Nick (Mouse) Depaul, Rudy Bannet, John J. Jones, Charles (Red Yarrington) Fred Gettner, Frank J. Bat, Erich (Fly face) Jay, Jasinski and a bunch more all with memories like setting their chatter rolls on fire, Mid shift hot feet, the trips to exotic places like the Hillbilly Guest House, The Milk bar, St Pauli's, the Phillips bar and some of the other fine watering holes in Darmstadt. How great the scenery was at some of the local swimming pools, and we don't want to forget Amsterdam, Paris, Zurich, and the fair city of Frankfurt (especially the area immediately across from the Train Station) Remember the fast pitch base ball game we organized. We divided into two sides. The Rummel Rascles vs the Seagram Sevens plus two. Collected for about two kegs of beer, Played after the last Mid Shift and had one heck of a game.

After X1 School at Keesler and X2 school at March Field, I took the USS Buchner at the end of 1954 to Bremerhaven Germany on my way to Landsburg. All this time I had worked as a ditty bopper. About the middle of 1958, they found out that I had been thru the X2 school so I moved to the X2 shopin the back room. You may remember me rolling around Darmstadt-Eberstadt in the 1954 red Pontiac Chieftain convertible I got from Charlie Cook of Charlie Trick when he went to Turkey to do "you know what." Where are you, Charlie? Charlie and I sang in a trio and quartet for most of the time we were there. Our pianist was Rudy Clark, U.S. Army, who went on to write for and accompany some of the great recording artists of that era. Other singers: Cecil Turner, Stan Lopatic, George Barr, Jim Brigham, Richard Goldsmith, all 6911th. They booted me from Crypto when I married a German National.  We have 3 children, 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. And they said it would never work! We have been back nine times (9)  (I went alone a 10th time), and dismayed by the modernization of, and massive immigration to, Germany. In 2006-2007 massive apartment houses are being built for immigrants. Smaller apartment house buildings are being leveled to make room. In those and in some neighborhoods, German isn't spoken. We obviously prefer the "good old days." They built a snack bar and pizza place right in the middle of the parking lot next to the PX. When we were on Cambrai in '72 the gate guards were in combat gear and armed to the teeth. Then for several years you could drive on the post, no gate guards, drive right up to the barracks. I remember times when me and Captain Nielsen would load up a jeep with messages that had to be transmitted, and our landlines were down. We headed for Det-1, Rhein-Main, armed with .45 caliber sidearms and the M-1 Carbine. We cut through the field at the site, pulled out onto the old road to Frankfurt, and drove like hell. Once there, Captain Nielsen found a chair or the Officer's Club, and I used Det-1's stuff to send the messages. What a time! ---Don Watson, 6911th Darmstadt, 55-60. I speak, read, write German! Send me your German-language documents to translate!! Reduced rates for 2nd RSM and 6911 RSM/RGM members!

I was not a member of the 2nd RSM or 6911th, but from 58 - 61 I was a intercept operator assigned to the 25th RSM at Clark AB Philippines, this was later changed to the 6922 RSM (RGM) until Mt Pitatubo closed Clark AB. While going through your web page I noticed you have a connection for several squadrons in PACAF. I checked the listing of personnel who were stationed in Europe and found one name I knew Charlie Graham. I retired from the Air Force 1 Aug 79 and went to work with the Civil Service at Keesler AFB Mississippi. From July 82 till Jul 86 I was an instructor in the Morse Intercept School at Keesler along with Charlie until it was deactivated and moved to Ft Devens Mass. The Air Force portion of the school was opened at Devens in Oct 86 and the last class graduated Keesler in Feb 87. I attended the intercept school in Thomson Hall from Dec 57 until I graduated on 24 Jun 58. Ft Devens has since closed and the part of the school is at Ft Huachuca Arizona and the rest is with the Navy at Cory Field Florida. It seems that most of the squadrons have closed up, I guess we are a dying breed. Hope you get this. I don't have a computer a home, however, my E-Mail address at Keesler is . Hope to hear from you.
